RPE stands for rate of perceived exertion. In cardio it usually means "how hard does this feel?". In strength training it means something much more specific and much more useful: how close that set was to the point where you could not complete another rep with good form [2].

The RPE scale lifters actually use

The version used in strength training is anchored to repetitions in reserve (RIR) — the reps you left in the tank. It was introduced and validated by Zourdos and colleagues, who found that ratings tracked bar velocity closely in both experienced and novice squatters, which is what makes it more than a vibe check [1].

How to rate a set without overthinking it

Ask the question at the moment you rack the bar, not five minutes later. The question is not "how tired am I?" — it is "how many more reps could I have done, at this weight, without form breaking down?" Subtract that number from 10 and you have your RPE [2].

  • Could have done two more, cleanly → RIR 2 → RPE 8
  • Might have got one more, and it would have been ugly → RIR 1 → RPE 9
  • The last rep already slowed to a crawl → RIR 0 → RPE 10
  • Genuinely no idea → rate it against a recent similar set rather than guessing in the abstract

How accurate are these estimates, really?

Honestly? Good enough to be useful, and worse than most lifters assume. Hackett and colleagues found estimates were accurate to roughly one repetition when lifters were within about 0–5 reps of failure, but error grew beyond two repetitions once 7–10 reps remained [3]. In other words, the further you stop from failure, the less you can trust the number.

Accuracy also varies by exercise and by lifter — it is not one fixed figure you can apply everywhere [6]. The encouraging part is that it is trainable: bench press RIR accuracy improved over six weeks of simply practising the ratings [7]. Rating your sets is the thing that makes you good at rating your sets.

Does being one rep off matter?

Usually not much, and that is exactly why RPE is practical. A systematic review with meta-analysis found at most a trivial hypertrophy advantage for taking sets to failure compared with stopping short [4]. A later series of meta-regressions found strength gains largely unaffected by proximity to failure, with only a small dose-response favouring closer to failure for hypertrophy [5].

So if you called it RPE 8 and it was really RPE 7, you have not wasted the set. That tolerance is what lets you autoregulate: on a bad day the weight that hits RPE 8 is lighter, and the training effect survives.

When RPE is the wrong tool

If you are weighing up whether to write your sets as an effort rating or as reps left, RPE vs RIR walks through where each one is the easier question to answer.

  • Far from failure. At 4+ reps in reserve your estimate is least reliable [3] — a percentage of 1RM holds the intended stimulus better.
  • Your first months of lifting. You have not yet felt what one rep from failure is like, so the scale has nothing to anchor to.
  • Unfamiliar exercises. Accuracy differs between movements [6]; a new lift needs exposure before your ratings mean anything.
  • As your only record. RPE is subjective. It is a layer on top of load, reps and sets — never a replacement for them.

How Reppit uses RPE

Is RPE the same as RIR?

They are two views of the same judgement. RIR counts the reps you had left; RPE scores the effort of the set. On the resistance-training scale, RIR ≈ 10 − RPE [1]. Which one you write in a program is a matter of preference and context: counting reps left is more concrete for newer lifters, while an RPE cap is easier to apply to a heavy top set whose weight should move with the day.

What RPE should most of my sets be?

The evidence supports a modest claim: across the range of proximities to failure that has been studied, hypertrophy differs at most trivially and strength gain is largely unaffected [4][5]. A common practical reading of that is to keep most working sets somewhere around 1–3 reps in reserve and save true failure for the occasional last set — but that is a training choice built on the evidence, not a finding of it.

Can I use half points like RPE 8.5?

Yes, and they are most meaningful near failure, where you can still tell "one more" from "maybe one more". Reppit's in-app wheel uses whole numbers 1–10 [8].

My RPE ratings feel inconsistent. Am I doing it wrong?

Probably not. Estimation error is normal, larger further from failure [3], and it improves with practice [7]. Consistency matters more than precision: rate every set the same way and the trend becomes informative even if individual numbers are imperfect.
